CLIFDEN NONPAREIL-OXFORDSHIRE

While working in Oxfordshire, I've made it a nightly ritual to set out my moth trap. Each morning brings a sense of anticipation as I eagerly check the trap to see what surprises await me. Today was especially exciting; to my delight, I discovered that I had caught my very first Clifden Nonpareil. This species has been on my most-wanted list for quite some time, especially since this year, I have seen an exceptional number of their sightings. The vibrant blue colour and intricate patterns of this magnificent moth are truly a sight to behold, making this capture a highlight of my moth-trapping endeavours.

This year, IRecord has reported an impressive number of sightings of the Clifden Nonpareil in the UK

My first Clifden Nonpareil

The Clifden Nonpareil is one of the largest and most impressive moths found in the UK. Its name means "beyond compare." Recent sightings indicate that this moth, which was believed to be extinct in the UK since the 1960s, has returned and is now breeding in southern Britain. It has a wingspan of nearly 12 cm and a bright blue stripe across its black hindwings. It is also known as the Blue Underwing. Many moth enthusiasts consider this species a prized find.
