SAVE STAMPS TO HELP ALBATROSSES
The RSPB’s Save Your Stamps appeal, which made more than £20,000 last year, encourages people to save postage stamps from their Christmas post and donate them to the charity to raise money for its Save the Albatross campaign. Albatrosses are facing a range of threats to their survival, with two-thirds of the family’s species in danger of extinction. The main threat is death on a hook at the end of a fishing longline. It’s estimated that around 100,000 albatrosses are killed each year by longline and trawler fishing vessels.CLICK ON LINK
KITTIWAKE IN DANGER OF GLOBAL EXTINCTION
BirdLife International has just announced the latest annual revision of birds on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List – and the bad news is that the total number of bird species regularly recorded in Britain that are considered to be facing the risk of extinction is now nine: Kittiwake, Puffin, European Turtle Dove, Common Pochard, Slavonian Grebe, Balearic Shearwater, Long-tailed Duck, Velvet Scoter and Aquatic Warbler.CLICK ON LINK
PALLID HARRIER-A POTENTIAL FIRST FOR CHESHIRE AND WIRRAL
At the end of September Alan Davies reported an interesting Harrier on the Dee marshes. After further observations of the bird by other birders it was confirmed it was a Pallid Harrier which is a potential first for Cheshire and Wirral.I was on my annual birding break in Shetland and missed the bird but my good friend Phil Woollen has done a right up on his blog about the bird.CLICK ON LINK
