AFTERNOON VISIT TO CANNOCK CHASE-STAFFORDSHIRE

Jenna and I visited Cannock Chase in Staffordshire today, hoping to see the over-wintering Great Grey Shrike.

Cannock Chase

Upon our arrival, we headed to the rifle range, where we met other birders who had just seen the bird, but it had flown away. After thoroughly searching the area, I was able to spot the bird perched up on a branch. Unfortunately, it flew off again and returned to its previous location.

We couldn't find the bird again after it flew, so we returned to the car. It was a nice afternoon walk and a place I hadn't visited for years.

EASTERN HILLS AND DERBYSHIRE DAY OUT

Jenna and I spent the morning at Wildboarclough in the eastern hills, and it didn't take long to locate Dipper, our first target bird.

Wildboarclough

One of the two dippers that were observed was carrying nesting materials.

Following fantastic dipper views, we continued on to Derbyshire's Carsington Water. The first winter female Lesser Scaup was eventually located when we arrived at Millfields carpark.

Other birds were present on the water, red-throated diver, great northern diver and a ring-necked duck.
