LEACH'S STORM PETREL-LEASOWE GUNSITES
I visited Leasowe gunsites with Malc curtin this afternoon as over the last few days Leach's petrels have been passing the north wirral coast. We arrived two hours before hide tide and it wasn't long before we connected with our first bird flying close to the shore line along with a Manx shearwater.
A total of 7 birds were seen over a two hour period which all showed really well with one landing on the sea.

EASTERN BLACK EARED WHEATEAR OR PIED WHEATEAR--KNOTT-END-ON-SEA-LANCASHIRE
On sunday news came out from Knott-end on-sea in Lancashire that a Eastern black wheatear had been found.I need this bird after several dips but I was stuck on a 12 hour shift at work.As the afternoon progressed and birders visited and photographs started to appear on social media it was looking more likely that the bird was widely being considered to look a better candidate for Pied wheatear.
I made arrangements when I left off at night to pick Malc curtin up in the morning to go and see the bird just in case it did turn out to be the latter.
I was up early on monday morning and news came out that the bird was still present so I picked Malc up and headed north. We soon arrived on site and picked the bird up straight away on the sea wall with four Northern wheatears.
A DNA sample has apparently been obtained on site yesterday,so let's wait and see what the results of that say … either way,it's an unusually early date in the autumn for a rare wheatear and the Wheatear sp has caused a quite a stir on social media where field observations and photos have divided opinions on its identity.A very educational bird whatever it is!
