THE ELUSIVE WRYNECK

Today, I visited Wareham Forest in Dorset and was pleased to rediscover the elusive Wryneck (Jynx torquilla), reported the previous day. This highly secretive woodpecker is a scarce passage migrant in Britain, often remaining hidden in woodland or scrub. The bird briefly perched on a dead pine before flying across the footpath and settling once more, allowing prolonged and excellent views. Observing its cryptic plumage and characteristic twisting movements was a reminder of why the Wryneck remains one of the most intriguing and sought-after migrants in the UK.

First view of the Wryneck

There has been a notable passage of Wrynecks along the south coast this week, so it was particularly enjoyable to catch up with one, as I hadn’t seen the species for several years.
