On 5 March 2015, news spread quickly through the birder community that Sean O’Hara had discovered a Black Scoter off East Hoyle Bank, Hoylake. This remarkable sighting represented a first for Cheshire and the Wirral, immediately generating interest from local and visiting birders alike. Unfortunately, due to the tide, I would have to wait until the following day for the opportunity to see it myself.
The next morning, 6 March 2015, Jenna and I made our way to East Hoyle Bank, scanning through hundreds of Common Scoters on the water. Patience and persistence proved worthwhile when we finally picked out the striking black-and-white male among the flocks.

What a magnificent bird! Its glossy black plumage and pale bill stood out clearly, confirming the excitement that had already rippled through the local birding community. The site was alive with other enthusiasts, all sharing in the thrill of a county first.
For me, the encounter was doubly special: it marked my 300th species for Cheshire and the Wirral. Congratulations to Sean O’Hara for discovering this truly memorable bird.
