AFTERNOON VISIT TO CANNOCK CHASE-STAFFORDSHIRE

Today, Jenna and I ventured to Cannock Chase in Staffordshire to locate the overwintering Great Grey Shrike. This elusive predator, known for its striking grey plumage and habit of impaling prey on thorns or barbed wire, has become a seasonal highlight for many birders in the area.

Cannock Chase

Despite initially being sighted, the Great Grey Shrike remained elusive during our search across the heathland and woodland edges. Nonetheless, Cannock Chase offered a quintessential winter landscape, with open rides and scattered pines bustling with resident tits and finches, a vivid reminder of the area’s rich and varied ecosystem.

While the Great Grey Shrike did not reveal itself again on this visit, the trip served as a reminder of the patience required in birding and the rewards that await those who keep returning to known sites.
