ACRE NOOK AND LAPWING HALL POOL BIRD SIGHTINGS 1ST-17TH SEPTEMBER 2016
GREAT WHITE EGRET-SANDBACH FLASHES
This afternoon, I visited Sandbach Flashes with my mother after a spot of shopping. The long-staying Great White Egret was still present on Elton Hall Flash, though it remained on the far side of the water, offering distant but clear views.
Other notable birds on the site included Common and Green Sandpipers, Ringed Plover, and Curlew, making for a pleasant and rewarding afternoon’s birding.

RIVACRE VALLEY NATURE PARK
This morning, I took a stroll around my local nature park, hoping to photograph the resident Kingfishers and any butterflies that were around. The weather was beautiful, and it was a real treat to have the reserve to myself before the dog walkers arrived.
Almost immediately, I spotted two Red Admirals fluttering along the path, providing a perfect start to the walk.

AMERICAN CLIFF SWALLOW-ISLES OF SCILLY
Yesterday morning, having just finished a 12-hour night shift, I pulled into my driveway utterly exhausted at 8:30am when a MEGA alert hit: “CLIFF SWALLOW, St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly”. Twitch mode instantly kicked in. I rang Malc Curtin, but family commitments meant he couldn’t make it. I quickly gathered my gear, and the long journey south began.
Skybus flights were fully booked, but after some frantic calls, a charter boat from Penzance was arranged, leaving at 3:00pm. Higgo even sorted a room for me at Al’s—everything was falling into place.
The journey across the channel was smooth. At sea, we connected with Manx Shearwaters, Fulmars, and even four Common Dolphins and two Porpoises, a perfect prelude to the twitch.
It had been a fantastic two days of birding, full of mega rarities, memorable company, and some of the best twitching experiences imaginable.
