EASTERN HILLS AND DERBYSHIRE DAY OUT

This morning, Jenna and I explored Wildboarclough in the Eastern Hills, and it wasn’t long before we located our first target of the day: the Dipper, busily foraging along the stream. One of the two birds observed was even carrying nesting materials, a promising sign that the breeding season is not far away.

Following these fantastic views, we continued our journey to Carsington Water in Derbyshire. At the Millfields car park, we eventually located the first-winter female Lesser Scaup, a highlight for the day.

The reservoir was alive with other interesting waterfowl. Among those noted were Red-throated Diver, Great Northern Diver, and a Ring-necked Duck, all providing excellent photographic opportunities and satisfying views.

It was a highly rewarding morning, combining classic streamside birding with open-water specialities, and a reminder of the diverse avian life on offer in the region.

MORNINGS BIRDING IN SOMERSET

I was up early this morning and picked up by Owen Parsons, who was chasing two life-list ticks: Kentish Plover and Least Sandpiper. I had already seen the Least Sandpiper earlier in the month, but the Kentish Plover was the real target — I had only ever encountered two in Britain before.

We arrived at Burham-on-Sea in Somerset just before sunrise. A small group of birders was already on site, having located the Kentish Plover roosting with a flock of Ringed Plovers

Birders on site

The bird, an adult female, carries a fascinating history: ringed in Germany on 14 June 2021, it has returned to this area every winter since 18 January 2022. We enjoyed excellent views as it moved quietly among the Ringed Plovers, a real treat for anyone who has waited years for a Kentish Plover in Britain.

By 10:00am, Owen had successfully added both species to his life list, and we were back in Cheshire by 2:00pm, comfortably ahead of the Friday evening rush. It was a short but highly productive trip, showcasing some of the finest winter waders the west coast of Somerset has to offer.

A FEW MORE YEARTICKS

I’ve just returned from a few days away birding with my good friend Owen Parsons, and we were fortunate to encounter some truly cracking species.

Our adventure began at Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire, where we were after a Richard’s Pipit. The bird proved elusive at times, weaving through the undergrowth before eventually offering excellent views as it foraged and then flew past us, calling. It was a treat to see this scarce species, as I hadn’t recorded one in several years.

Birders on site

From there, we headed north to Welney WWT in Norfolk, where the reserve’s winter waterfowl were on show. A Black-necked Grebe in winter plumage and four Bewick’s Swans were highlights. Although six Tundra Bean Geese were reportedly present on the reserve, we couldn’t locate them during our visit.

Our next stop was Warham Greens, where we were delighted to enjoy close views of a female Pallid Harrier

The area also offered sightings of two Barn Owls, a Short-eared Owltwo Hen Harriers, and two Marsh Harriers, all set against a stunning Norfolk sunset. After a full day of birding, we retired to King’s Lynn for a well-earned night’s rest.

Sunset At Warham Greens

The following morning, we ventured into Cambridgeshire, beginning at Eldernell, at the northern end of the Nene washes. After some searching, we located four Common Cranes feeding in the waterlogged fields, a striking sight against the winter landscape.

Common Crane

Continuing into West Deeping in Lincolnshire, we connected with a flock of 32 Red-crested Pochard, the largest number I’ve personally seen. This location had been recommended by my friend Josh Jones, who recorded 162 Red-crested Pochard in the area during 2022.

Josh recorded 162 Red Crested Pochard
In this area in 2022.

Our final highlight came at Winteringham in North Lincolnshire, where a rare Eastern Yellow Wagtail was discovered interacting with eight Pied Wagtails. The bird’s distinctive call had already been heard by the finder and a few on-site birders before we arrived, and we were able to enjoy excellent views.

It was a thoroughly rewarding few days, packed with scarce birds and winter specialties, and a welcome addition of several year ticks to the list before returning home.

This morning, I visited North Wales and was delighted to connect with a stunning Glossy Ibis. The bird had been discovered late yesterday afternoon, and fortunately it remained in the area, allowing me to enjoy excellent views today.

This individual was distinct from the one I missed back in late January at Traeth Glaslyn Nature Reserve, Porthmadog, as it showed worn coverts. In pristine condition and striking in appearance, it was a truly rewarding sighting — well worth the drive.

SATURDAY BIRDING

This morning, I visited a private site in Cheshire with Owen Parsons, where we enjoyed cracking views of Marsh Tit. Four individuals were located as we walked the area, including a male in full song.

Marsh Tits are scarce residents in Cheshire and the Wirral, and are now on the Red List of species of conservation concern following a sustained national decline. It was a brilliant morning observing this elusive species, and the site is one I will definitely return to in spring.

After dropping Owen back home, I picked up Jenna, and we headed north to Lancashire in pursuit of two Bewick’s Swans, reportedly with a herd of Whooper Swans at Cockersand Abbey. On arrival, we found the swan flock and, after scanning carefully, I eventually located one Bewick’s Swan feeding. The second bird remained elusive, so we began walking back to the car.

News then arrived that a juvenile Great Northern Diver was showing well a few miles away, prompting a quick detour to Pine Lake. Upon arrival, the diver was located immediately and gave superb views, a fitting finale to a varied and rewarding day of birding.

MORNINGS BIRDING IN LIVERPOOL

A few hours spent birding the Liverpool docklands today produced an outstanding reward, with excellent views of Jack Snipe in the dock area just south of Seaforth. It took little time to locate the first bird using thermal imaging, after which it performed impeccably, allowing prolonged and detailed observation. In total, three Jack Snipe were found during the session, all inhabiting muddy dockside margins.

They were accompanied by four Common Snipe, offering the opportunity to compare the two species side by side. All birds were actively feeding and exhibited their trademark skulking behaviour, relying on camouflage and immobility rather than flight. The Jack Snipe in particular demonstrated their characteristic reluctance to flush, remaining crouched and motionless until almost underfoot.

An excellent example of how careful coverage of overlooked urban wetlands can yield high-quality winter birding, especially when modern techniques such as thermal imaging are brought into play.

After leaving the docks, I moved on to Sefton Park, where the unmistakable calls of Ring-necked Parakeets were heard almost immediately on arrival. A total of 14 birds were noted, with several descending to feed at close range, providing excellent photographic opportunities as well as prolonged views.

The species now feels thoroughly established here, its noisy presence and confiding behaviour adding a distinctive urban flavour to the afternoon’s birding and neatly rounding off a highly productive day in Liverpool.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning of winter birding, serving as a timely reminder that even within heavily urbanised landscapes, a few hours spent outdoors can still deliver unexpected and rewarding encounters.
