AFTERNOONS BIRDING AT LEASOWE LIGHTHOUSE

I spent the afternoon birding with Allan Conlin yesterday, hoping to see some spring migrants on the north Wirral coast. We started off at New Brighton pontoon, where we connected with 8 Purple sandpiper mixed in with Common Redshank and Turnstone.

We then headed to Meols for the incoming tide, hoping for a white-winged gull, but after a good hour searching through the gulls, only Herring and Black-headed could be found and a few Cormorants.

With the tide almost in, we then headed for Leasowe lighthouse, where we connected with 145 Curlew in the fields on Park lane and a single Stock dove.

The paddocks leading to the lighthouse were very quiet, but as we entered the path leading to the lighthouse, I connected with my first Chiffchaff of the year.

Other birds of note were 2 Long tailed tit and a Goldcrest.

The sun was now cracking the flags, and 2 Comma butterflies were seen.

Moving on to Kerr's field, we found our first male Wheatear of the year and a White Wagtail. They were both distant in the field, so the photos were poor but alright for record shots.

We spent the next half an hour searching for a Yellow-browed warbler that had been reported yesterday, but there was no sign.

A good afternoon's birding, and thankfully, spring has arrived!
