A day off at last and a solo drive to Anglesey to see Mark sutton's great find,a long staying Elegant tern at Cemlyn bay.My last one was at Black rock sands near Porthmadog 19 years ago in July 2002,where does time go!
Elegant Tern-Black Rock Sands
I have seen some great birds over the years at this site including American Golden Plover,Eastern Yellow wagtail,Sooty Tern,Turkestan shrike and a possible Cayenne Tern.
Arriving just after 10.00am I walked along the shingle bank and soon reached the tern colony.
The Tern colony at Cemlyn bay
The Elegant tern was showing really well on arrival in with the Sandwich terns.
Photo analysis suggests that it is likely to be one of the three mature birds from Polder de Sébastopol, Barbâtre, France, present between 19 and 27 June. The other two are still there, paired up and raising two chicks in a large colony of Sandwich Terns and Meditteranean gulls. The male of the pair is known as 'Bird C' and has visited Britain in the recent past, appearing at a number of sites in southern England in June 2017. This is the second Welsh record.
After good views of the bird the heavens opened so I headed back to the car wet through!
News then came out that the Pacific golden plover was still at Malltraeth that had been found yesterday evening,so I headed straight there. On arrival the plover was showing well, close to the footpath.
This was only my second Pacific golden plover for Britain and Wales second, the last being at Oakenholt Marsh in 1990,Clwyd.
Malltraeth
A great morning's birding and great to catch up with some familiar faces.
