Last night, news broke that birder Richard Ashcroft had photographed a Pied Wheatear at the east end of Meols Promenade. This sighting marked a first for both Cheshire and Wirral, making it an incredible find. Apparently, the bird had also been seen the previous afternoon.
I went into work feeling apprehensive, worried that the bird wouldn’t still be there in the morning. However, I managed to leave my night shift early, and fortunately, while driving up the M53, Allan Conlin announced that the bird was still present.
Upon my arrival, I noticed all the usual faces gathered, and I was thrilled to see the bird showing very well on the promenade wall.
First winter Pied Wheatear
A great bird for the north Wirral peninsula, and just goes to show anything can turn up!
