MORNINGS BIRDING IN SOMERSET

I was up early this morning and got picked up by Owen Parsons, who needed Kentish plover and Least sandpiper for his life list. I had already seen the Least sandpiper early in the month but really wanted to see the Kentish plover, as I'd only ever seen two in Britain.

We arrived at Burham-on-Sea in Somerset just before sunrise and when we arrived, some birders had already found the bird roosting with Ringed plover's.

Birders on site

This adult female Kentish plover was ringed in Germany on 14 June 2021 and has been returning to this area every winter since 18th January 2022.

After great views of the bird we travelled half an hour down the road to Steart WWT. On arrival at Otterhampton Marsh we entered the Quantock hide and the Least sandpiper was already on show in front of the hide.

Two lifers for Owen, and both birds were seen by 10.00 am and we were back in Cheshire by 2.00 pm before the friday rush hour.

A FEW MORE YEARTICKS

Ive just returned from a few days away birding with my good friend Owen Parsons and saw some cracking birds.

At Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire, where we started, we saw a Richard's pipit.

Birders on site

The bird was elusive at times but was eventually seen well foraging in the undergrowth before taking off and flying past us calling.

It was good to see this scarce species,
as I hadn't seen one in a few years.

After this, we went to Welney WWF in Norfolk, where we saw a winter plumaged Black necked grebe and four Bewick's swan.

Black Necked Grebe

Owen scoping through the swan herd, where we found four Bewick's Swan

Six Tundra bean geese were reportedly on the reserve but we couln't find them.

Moving on from Welney we headed east to Warham greens where we had good views of a female Pallid harrier.

Female Pallid Harrier

Other birds of note were 2 Barn owl, Short eared Owl, 2 Hen harrier and a 2 Marsh harrier.

Sunset At Warham Greens

After a full days birding we made are way to Kings Lynn for a goods night sleep.

This morning we got up and headed into Cambridgeshire, stopping at the Eldernell, which is at the north end of the Nene washes. Four common cranes that had been around for several days were eventually found after scoping the nearby waterlogged fields.

Common Crane

Moving on up the road to West deeping in Lincolnshire we connected with 32 Red crested pochard, the most i'd ever seen.

This is my friends patch Josh jones who sent us here to see these birds.

Josh recorded 162 Red Crested Pochard
in this area in 2022.

The discovery of an Eastern yellow wagtail in Winteringham, North Lincolnshire, was then reported. The Eastern yellow wagtail was interacting with eight Pied wagtails when we finally got to the location. The bird call was apparently heard by the finder and a few on-site birders.

A great few days away birding and home for the evening with a few more year ticks on the list.

SATURDAY BIRDING

I visited a private site in Cheshire this morning with Owen Parsons, where we got cracking views of marsh tit; four individual birds were found as we walked around the area, with one male bird in full song.

Marsh tits are scarce residents in Cheshire and Wirral, and they are now on the Red List of species of conservation concern, following a sustained fall in their national population.

A brilliant morning was spent watching this scarce species, and it is a site I will definitely be visiting again in the spring.

After dropping Owen off back at home, I picked Jenna up, and we headed north to try and see two Bewick's swans that had been seen with a herd of Whooper swans at Cockersand Abbey in Lancashire.

On arrival we found the herd of Whooper swan's.

After scanning through the herd, I eventually found a Bewick's swan feeding.

I couldn't find the second bird that had been reported, so we started to walk back to the car. News then broke that a juvenile great northern diver was showing well a few miles up the road, so we headed there.

On arrival at Pine Lake, the juvenile great northern diver was found straight away and showed really well.

A great day's birding! Roll on next weekend.

MORNINGS BIRDING IN LIVERPOOL

I spent a few hours birding over in Liverpool today and managed to get great views of Jack snipe around the dock area, just south of Seaforth. It didn't take long to find a Jack snipe in the thermal, and the one below showed really well. A total of three Jack snipe were found along with 4 Common snipe.

Moving on from the docks, I called in at Sefton Park, where it didn't take long to hear and see the ring-necked parakeets.

A total of 14 birds were seen, with the above bird being found on the feeders. A nice morning's birding; it's good to get out!

NORTHUMBRIA SCOTER AND PIPIT

I and Jenna got up at 4.00am this morning and headed north to Goswick Bay in Northumberland, where a black scoter had been found. I needed this for my England list, as I had only seen one of this species before, many moons ago in February 2003 at Llanfairfechan in Gwynedd, Wales.

Llanfairfechan bird

We arrived on site just after 8.30am and made our way across the golf course and sand dunes, arriving at the beach.

Goswick Sands

It took a good hour to find the bird (see below) amongst the common scoter, but eventually it was found even though it was distant. Other birds of note while I was looking for the Black scoter were Black-throated diver, 2 Red-necked grebes, Red-throated diver, and 8 Long-tailed ducks.

Shocking photo, but it's on the England list

Moving on from here, we called in at Ross Bank Sands, where an American pipit had been present for the last month. The bird was good 2.5 km from where we parked the car, so we took our time enjoying the sea views on our way.

Skeins of Brent geese flew past us as we walking down the beach and a Great northern diver was out in the bay.

On arrival, the bird was showing straight away, feeding on the seaweed bed.

We had great views of the bird, and we just sat down on the beach as it approached us down to a few meters. A great day birding, and we were back in Cheshire for 7.00pm.

SATURDAY BIRDING

This morning, I spent time in the ploughed fields beside the Mersey River in Oglet, Lancashire, where a Shorelark had been spotted for the past few weeks alongside a group of Skylark.

Birders on the scene assured me that the Shorelark had been spotted a few times prior to my arrival, despite the fact that the birds were extremely flighty when I arrived. It wasn't long before the birds settled again in the field, and the Shorelark was seen moving between ridges.

After good views of the Shorelark, I started to make my way back to the car when two short-eared owls flew in and started to hunt over the marsh on the incoming tide, always great to see; sadly, no photographs had I left my camera in the car.

Oglet shore

I stopped off on the way back home to pick Jenna up at the WSR Recycling plant near Widnes, where I saw my good friend Rob, who had a 1st winter Caspian gull sitting on the roof of the recycling plant—perfect timing.

Having picked Jenna up in the car, we then headed to Sandbach Flashes, where we connected with the green-winged teal that had been present since before Christmas.

Green Winged Teal

Also present on Rosemary's flood was a green sandpiper. Leaving here, we then headed to Parkgate on the Wirral to try and see some raptors before dusk.

Parkgate Marsh

On arrival, it didn't take long before we saw a Merlin fly past us, and a male Peregrine was sitting out on a post on the marsh. As the sun was setting, a male Hen harrier put in a fine display. What a bird!

Just as the hen harrier went down on the marsh, a barn owl flew in from the nearby fields, hunting in front of us.

A great day's birding, and some top birds were added to the year list.
