RUN OUT INTO NORTH WALES

I visited North Wales today with my partner, Jenna, and we saw some wonderful birds on our travels. We started off at Newborough Warren, but no firecrests were seen, although we did catch a brief glimpse of a red squirrel.

Further along the road at Malltraeth, we observed a significant number of Wigeon and Pintail ducks.

Continuing from here, we stopped at Aberffraw, where we had great views of a little owl sitting in the morning sun. Then a second bird joined it.

The next stop was Holyhead Mountain, where we saw two choughs. Holyhead Harbour held a winter-plumaged Black Guillemot and a distant Red-throated Diver.

Driving past the inland sea, we stopped at Penrhos Country Park, where eight pale-bellied Brent geese were visible near the car park. A Slavonian grebe was also seen, along with good numbers of Black-tailed Godwits, Sanderlings, and Grey Plovers.

We heard news that two Surf Scoters were sighted at Llanddulas, so we made our way there. We were able to connect with the birds, although they were quite distant. In addition to the Surf Scoters, we also observed a couple of thousand Common Scoters, two Velvet Scoters, and two Red-throated Divers.

Llandullas Beach

Leaving Llandullas Beach, we stopped at Kinmel Bay near Rhyl, where we soon found a female Black Redstart that showed really well, along with a Snow Bunting.

DAY OUT BIRDING IN NORTHUMBERLAND

Today, I spent the day in Northumberland with Owen Parsons. Unfortunately, we were unable to spot the Grey-headed Lapwing, which had been reliably seen over the past few days and appeared to have settled into a consistent pattern. This was Owen's second attempt to see this bird!

                                                                 East Chevington Reserve

During our visit, we noted several interesting birds before moving on: a Barn Owl, two Marsh Harriers, and a Sparrowhawk. Thankfully, across from East Chevington Reserve, the juvenile White-billed Diver was still visible at Druridge Bay Country Park. There was also a female Scaup on site.

Moving on from here, we stopped at Jarrow on the River Tyne and had great views of an adult Ross's Gull. It turned into a bit of a gull fest, and we also spotted a Mediterranean Gull and an Iceland Gull.

It was a good day of birding. It's a shame about the Lapwing, but I'm sure Owen will attempt to see it..

HIGHLANDS BIRDING WEEKEND

I have just returned from a three-day birding trip in the Highlands of Scotland with Dan Pointon and Owen Parsons. Despite the challenging weather at times, we were able to see some fantastic birds and mammals during our adventure. A highlight was the Ptarmigan, which was a lifer for Owen. Although Dan spotted it, we were on the other side of the mountain and unfortunately missed it due to time constraints and dwindling daylight. We also attempted to visit another site during our stay, but the weather did not cooperate.

Here is a list of places we visited and the birds and mammals we encountered:
