TRACKING DEVICES SIGNIFICANTLY BURDEN MIGRANT WARBLERS

The tools ornithologists use to track the journeys of migrating birds provide invaluable insights that can help halt the declines of vulnerable species. However, a new study from The Condor:Ornithological Applications shows that these data come at a cost — in some cases, these tracking devices reduce the chances that the birds carrying them will ever make it back to their breeding grounds.CLICK ON LINK

PALLID HARRIER-DUNSOP VALLEY-FOREST OF BOWLAND-LANCASHIRE

With news breaking last week that an adult male Pallid Harrier had been seen in the Forest of Bowland me and partner Dianne decided that we would go and try and see it today.
It only took us an hour and half to get to the site after some quick stop off's to take in the idyllic countryside.

THE FOREST OF BOWLAND
Parking the car up in Dunsop Bridge which is apparently the most central village in the United kingdom we started the long walk up the Dunsop valley.
The valley was full of birds as we walked up it.7 Common sandpipers flew up and down the river along with two Dippers and 5 Grey Wagtails.

COMMON SANDPIPER
There were also good numbers of Willow warblers and a Ring ouzel put in a brief appearance before flying over a ridge.
WILLOW WARBLER
After an hour we eventually arrived at the Pallid harrier site but the bird wasn't showing as it had gone missing for about half an hour.We had to wait a further forty minutes before the bird showed and what a sight it was.The Pallid harrier appeared from the heather and did a few passes along the valley before flying right over us.

PALLID HARRIER
What a magnificent bird and well worth the walk to see it.After great views of the bird we started the long walk back to the car and finished a fantastic day off by having a drink by the river.
ANOTHER GREAT DAYS BIRDING!

DAYS BIRDING ON THE WIRRAL

With good numbers of Black terns being seen throughout Cheshire and Wirral yesterday I started off this morning birding at New Brighton hoping to see some Black terns that had been reported in the mouth of the Mersey. There was no sign of any on arrival but did have 10 Sandwich terns that flew towards Crosby beach.
Moving on to Leasowe I soon connected with 2 Whinchat's in Kerr's field along with 3 Wheatear's.
TWO WHINCHAT'S WERE IN KERR'S FIELD
Walking to the bottom of Lingham lane I met up with Allan conlin who had found two Lesser Whitethroats. The birds were real skulkers but eventually showed well around the pond area.A Swift put in a quick pass over us and a Reed warbler called from a nearby reed bed.
Other areas were checked but little else of note was seen around the Leasowe area apart from 4 White Wagtails in the paddocks at the top end of Park lane and 2 Common Whitethroats were near the pond at the top Lingham lane.
With news that eight Black terns had been found at Burton RSBP I made my way there but on arrival again the birds had flown east.NO LUCK TODAY!Other birds of note on the reserve were a Spoonbill, two Spotted Redshank and good numbers of Common Whitethroats.
 SPOONBILL
COMMON WHITETHROAT
SPOTTED REDSHANK
Walking up to Burton watchpoint the small wooded area was a carpet of Bluebells.

After a good days birding I started to head home when news came out that there were 32 Black Terns on the Weaver bend at Frodsham. After dipping this species twice in one day would I be third time lucky!
On arrival at Frodsham two birders were on the terns with there scopes and let me have a look before I started the long walk down to the bend.AT LAST I HAD CONNECTED!
THE WEAVER BEND
Walking down the Weaver as I approached the bend alot of the terns started to disperse up into the air and flew really high but thankfully they came back down onto the river.
 18 BLACK TERNS

Standing on the bank and looking down on the Weaver I couldn't believe what I was witnessing,I counted 32 of them.IT WAS A TERN FEST!I had chased them around all day and now it had paid off!
THE BLACK TERNS FEEDING OVER THE RIVER
After watching this great spectacle I headed back to the car.Whilst walking back down the river I saw my first Sedge warbler of the year and had a reeling Grasshopper warbler.

RED WINGED BLACKBIRD ON NORTH RONALDSAY-A BRITISH FIRST

After seemingly weeks of endless blazing strong westerly, north-westerly or northerly winds bringing snow and hail most days, we were overjoyed when the wind finally swung round to the east but after a day of slack weather it had picked up again to a cold force 6-7 ... but at least it was from the east!CLICK ON LINK

1ST FOR BRITAIN-RED WINGED BLACKBIRD-GARSO-NORTH RONALDSAY-ORKNEY

I was out shopping this morning when the Mega alert went off: "RED WINGED BLACKBIRD-NORTH RONALDSAY.". I was straight on the phone to Simon Slade, and my place was booked on a scheduled flight for the following morning. PANIC OVER!
There had never been one of these birds in this country before or even on this side of the Atlantic. The first images started to appear on Twitter of the bird as I was getting myself organised for an early start in the morning.

THESE IMAGES OF THE BIRD WERE PUT ON TWITTER BY SIMON DAVIES THE FINDER
I met up with the usual crew of Fred Fearne, Malcolm Curtin, Simon Slade, and Mark Sutton at Lymm Services, and we set off north to catch our plane from Thirsk. News then came out that the bird was still present, much to the relief of everyone in the car.
A couple of hours later, we arrived at the airport and waited for our pilot. A Lesser whitethroat showed well near the car whilst we waited, and we also had 7 Arctic terns over the airfield. Swallows have now arrived in full force, and one landed on a nearby building sunning itself.
SWALLOW
We didn't have to wait long before the pilot arrived, and we were off!
PLANE SORTED WE WERE OFF!
The scheduled flight up to the Orkneys was great with good visibility.2 and a half hours later we reached the Orkney's and had North Ronaldsay in our sights.
 FLYING OVER THE ORKNEYS
NORTH RONALDSAY
We soon landed and started the half-hour walk over to the other side of the island, where we met Simon Davis, who worked at the bird observatory and had found the bird the previous day. Simon explained the bird was feeding in an iris bed and would have to be flushed to be seen.It didn't take long before the bird flew up towards us and landed distantly on a telegraph wire. I got straight on the bird through Dan Pointon's scope before it flew over to us and landed on some red gas bottles. The bird then showed well again on a roof before flying back into a nearby iris bed.
SCOPE VIEWS WERE NEEDED AT FIRST

THATS BETTER!BRITAIN'S FIRST RED WINGED BLACKBIRD!
There was no way the bird could be seen without an organised flush, which was well controlled by Simon, who would wait a few hours for planes to arrive and birders to gather before doing it again, putting the birds welfare first and other breeding birds that were arriving back on the island. CLICK ON LINK for further information regarding this.
THE IRIS BED WHERE THE BIRD WAS FOUND
Due to time and getting good views of the bird, we headed back to the airfield and did some birding on the way.
 GOLDEN PLOVER
 ROCK DOVE
COMMON GULL
Other birds of note whilst walking back were Fulmar, Twitter, Arctic, and Great Skua. Getting to the airport, we met up again with our pilot and started the journey home.
NORTH Ronaldsa AIRPORT
The whole day had been fantastic, and we landed back at Thirsk at 5.30pm, eventually getting back to Ellesmere Port just after 8pm with another 1st for Britain on my list.
